What They Don’t Tell You About Making Your First Bag…

I’ve taught hundreds of people how to make their very first leather bag—but there’s one thing I always forget to mention: it’s never just about the bag.

Yes, you’ll leave with something beautiful that you’ve crafted yourself (and let’s be honest, you’ll keep showing it off for weeks). But the bit no one expects? That overwhelming sense of “I actually made this!” pride. It’s brilliant.

Whether you’re a total beginner or someone who once sewed a hem back in school, walking into the Hands of Tym studio is like stepping into a calm creative bubble. People often tell me they arrive feeling nervous—“I’m not crafty,” “What if I mess it up?”—but they leave glowing. I’ve had engineers, teachers, midwives, retirees, even father-daughter duos. Everyone’s welcome. And everyone creates something uniquely theirs.

Some of my favourite feedback is when people say, “It was the most relaxing day I’ve had in ages,” or “I had no idea I was capable of this.” Or when they tell me they still get compliments on their bag months later—and proudly say, “Oh, I made it.”

So if you’ve ever scrolled past one of our workshops thinking “maybe one day”… let this be your sign.

Come and join us. You’ll learn a skill, meet some lovely people, and walk away with more than just a bag—you’ll carry the confidence and joy of having made something, with your own two hands.

See you soon in the studio 💛
